garment series: deconstruct + reconstruct your garments
Do you have a stack of old t-shirts, sweatshirts, or jackets that you never wear but can't bear to part with? Transform your old clothes into something fresh and stylish in this new series! This class is the perfect opportunity to give those beloved garments a second life. Our garment guru, Nancy, will guide you through the process of deconstructing and reconstructing your existing wardrobe staples into new, one-of-a-kind, unique garments. Students can add pockets, patchwork, patches, sleeves, embroidery or sashiko stitches to their upcycled garment.
Students will use the first class to design and plan their upcycled garment, leaving the remaining class sessions to work on seam ripping, assembling, embellishing, and re-stitching their garment to completion.
Please note, this is NOT an alterations class - it's an upcycling class! For this class, we'll be focusing only on sweatshirts, jackets, tops, or t-shirts - please do not bring in pants, skirts, shorts, or bottoms.
This class is suitable for graduates of our Garment 101 class, or for those who have prior garment sewing experience. Students must be able to confidently thread and operate a sewing machine independently.
Required Materials - What to Bring To Class:
- (1) to (2) top garments - sweatshirts, denim jackets, long-sleeve knit or woven tops. NO lightweight fabrics (including rayon, silk, velvet, or velour). Garments MUST be prewashed prior to attending class.
- assorted fabric scraps and/or fat quarters to add embellishments - like pockets, patchwork sleeves, etc.
- (1+) spool of coordinating thread to match your fabrics
Required Tools:
- rotary cutter + acrylic ruler
- fabric scissors
- pins and/or clips
- seam ripper
- chalk or frixion pen
Cancellation Policy:
If you are unable to attend the class, a refund will only be provided if you notify us 72 hours in advance in writing by email and there is a waitlist for the class, and we are able to fill your spot. Otherwise, a credit for a future class will be issued.
No refunds or credits will be provided if you notify us less than 72 hours in advance. By registering for the class, you are agreeing to this cancellation policy.
