quilting skills: foundation paper piecing

Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) is a unique quilt piecing method. The technique uses paper as a foundation to stabilize the quilt block as it is constructed. Once the quilt block is completed, the paper is removed.

With FPP, almost any shape, size or type of block is possible. The technique is used to achieve precise, small and detailed piecing, and specific or unusual shapes that might not necessarily be achieved through traditional piecing. It can be applied to the simplest or complex quilt blocks or units.

In this class, students will learn the concept of FPP as they work on constructing a paper pieced block.  Students will not complete a project in this class, but will learn the FPP process from start to finish and will complete as many blocks as time allows, which can then be used to complete a finished product of your choosing; the Bits N Pieces pattern includes instructions for making a pillow or table runner, and we have Project Kits available for either option.

This class is suitable for intermediate sewists. Students must already know how to use a rotary cutter to cut fabric.
