bag series: birdie sling
Join Melissa in the studio this November for a 2-week morning session to make the fabulous Birdie Sling by Amy Butler! This modern sling bag is perfect for those large, vibrant prints you've been saving that just need to be shown off! It's a great bag for everyday use and is roomy enough to store your essentials like a book, water bottle, wallet, keys and cellphone.
During the first class, we'll start off with a cutting session to prepare the fabric and interfacing needed for this project and begin sewing, leaving the second class for the remainder of bag construction. Please make sure to print out, assemble, and bring the pattern and instructions with you to class - the PDF pattern can be purchased on Amy Butler's website and is linked below under "Required Materials".
This class is suitable intermediate level students. Prior bag making experience is required; ideally, students will have successfully sewn at least one bag to completion prior to attending this class. Students must be able to confidently thread and operate a sewing machine independently.
Finished Size: 28" tall (including handles) x 18" wide.

- exterior fabric: 1-1/8 yd of 44" wide quilting cotton
- lining fabric: 1-1/8 yd of 44" wide quilting cotton
- accent fabric (bands and handles): 1-1/8 yd of 44" wide quilting cotton
- 3-1/2 yds of Pellon SF101
- (1) 3/4" magnetic snap
- (1) spool of coordinating thread
Recommended Fabrics:
- We recommend using quilting cotton for this bag.
Required Tools:
- fabric scissors
- rotary cutter + acrylic ruler
- seam ripper
- pins and/or wonder clips
- chalk or frixion pen

If you are unable to attend, a refund will only be provided if you notify us 72 hours in advance in writing by email, there is a waitlist for the class, AND we are able to fill your spot. Otherwise, a credit for a future class will be issued.
No refunds or credits will be provided if you notify us less than 72 hours in advance. By registering for the class, you are agreeing to this cancellation policy.
