garment series: blackwood cardigan
Fall is headed our way, which means that cardigans will be making their way back into your wardrobe. Designed with layering in mind, the Blackwood Cardigan by Helen's Closet will take your "sewing-with-knits" game up a notch. Join Erin for a 3-week evening session this November to make your very own.
A versatile addition to your wardrobe, The Blackwood Cardigan is the perfect layering piece that has a purpose year-round! It's fitted shape and extra-long sleeves make it perfect for wearing under jackets and vests in the cooler months, while also looking stylish over tank tops and dresses. This cardigan features minimal excess fabric in the front, a close fit around the neck and shoulders, two length options, and patch pockets at hand level. It's simple, yet stylish, and can complement any outfit you wear any season of the year!
The first class will include a tracing and cutting session for students to prepare their fabric (students must arrive to class with their PDF pattern printed and assembled together), leaving the second and third class for garment construction. In this garment series, students will learn how to sew sleeves and patch pockets, while also learning how to work with knit fabrics. Please note, there may be homework assigned in between classes to ensure the garment will be completed during the allotted class time. Or, if you need some extra time, we encourage you to register for one of our Garment Lab sessions!
This class is suitable for intermediate students who have graduated from our Garment 101 course or have an equivalent experience level. Students must have sewn at least (1) garment to completion successfully. Students must be able to confidently thread and operate a sewing machine independently.
Required Materials:
- (1) PDF Pattern: Blackwood Cardigan by Helen's Closet **see pattern note below
- Knit Fabric - yardage is dependent on size being made, please refer to the pattern for accurate measurements
- 10” (25 cm) clear elastic, twill tape, or other stabilizer for the shoulder seam
- (1) spool of coordinating thread
**Pattern Note: Students must purchase and download the pattern directly from Helen's Closet's website (linked here). This pattern includes two size options - the B-cup pattern accommodates sizes 0-22 and a D-cup pattern accommodates sizes 12-34. Once purchased, students must print out their pattern pieces, cut them to their specific size, and assemble the PDF pieces together BEFORE attending the first class. There is no time allotted in class to assemble your PDF pieces together, so please make sure to complete this step at home.
Recommended Fabric:
- We recommend using light to medium-weight knit fabrics with at least 40% stretch widthwise and 20% stretch lengthwise, such as a sweater knit, jersey knit, or French terry.
- As with all garment classes, we recommend students wash and dry their fabric prior to the start of class to prevent any further shrinking.

Cancellation Policy:
If you are unable to attend, a refund will only be provided if you notify us 72 hours in advance in writing by email, there is a waitlist for the class, AND we are able to fill your spot. Otherwise, a credit for a future class will be issued.
No refunds or credits will be provided if you notify us less than 72 hours in advance. By registering for the class, you are agreeing to this cancellation policy.
