bag series: smocked zipper pouch

Learn the technique of hand smocking in this brand-new class!  

Smocking is a fun way to add decorative stitches that also create elasticity and fullness to a project. The technique consists of sewing embroidery stitches to the surface of fabric which is then pulled up into tiny tucks + gathers. The resulting effect produces an attractive and practical way to shape bags and garments.  The attention to detail both in the preparation and the hand stitching leads to a beautifully finished hand-embroidered garment. 

During this 4-week class, students will learn the basics of smocking, fabric manipulation, hand pleating, zipper application + bag construction. This class is suitable for confident beginner to intermediate students who have experience in sewing with zippers. Please note, students should not cut their fabric prior to the first class, as students will be cutting after smocking in the first class.

Required Materials:
- (1) Pattern: Honeycomb Zip Pouch by Katelyn Vanhise (will be provided to you in class)
- 1/4 yd exterior fabric (we recommend a chambray or solid cotton)
- 1 fat quarter or 1/4 yd lining fabric
- (2) 9"x12" rectangles of fusible fleece
- 9" metal zipper
- embroidery floss for smocking - color should be a high contrast to exterior fabric - available to purchase in the shop
- (1) spool of coordinating thread for bag construction and for the hand stitching at the top edge

Recommended Fabric:
Smocking requires lightweight fabric with a stable weave that gathers well. We recommend using a light-weight solid chambray for the exterior fabric and cotton for the lining fabric.

Required Tools:
- rotary cutter + acrylic ruler
- scissors
- (2) frixion pens in two different colors (new pens preferred)
- Bohin Size 24 embroidery/chenille needles
- pins and clips
