quilting skills: foundation paper piecing

Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) is a unique quilt piecing method. The technique uses paper as a foundation to stabilize the quilt block as it is constructed. Once the quilt block is completed, the paper is removed.

With FPP, almost any shape, size or type of block is possible. The technique is used to achieve precise, small and detailed piecing, and specific or unusual shapes that might not necessarily be achieved through traditional piecing. It can be applied to the simplest or complex quilt blocks or units.

In this class, students will learn the concept of FPP as they work on constructing a kaleidoscope paper pieced block (shown in photo).  Students will not complete a project in this class, but will learn the FPP process from start to finish and will complete as many blocks as time allows, which can then be used to complete a finished product of your choosing (pillow, bag, quilt, etc.)

This class is suitable for intermediate sewists. Students must already know how to use a rotary cutter to cut fabric.

Required Materials: (Note: fabric amounts shown below will be enough for students to complete a small project, such as a pillow or bag. Additional fabric will be needed for larger projects).
- at least 10 coordinating fabrics - bring scraps (at least 12"x12" each), fat eighths or fat quarters. A 10" layer cake also works well!
