garment series: gilbert top
Introducing the Gilbert Top by Helen's Closet! This boxy button-up shirt is the perfect addition to add to your handmade spring wardrobe. Keep it casual and compliment the top with your favorite pair of jeans, or dress it up by pairing it with your favorite flowy skirt.
The Gilbert Top is a button up shirt with a camp-style collar and a relaxed fit. The pattern offers two views - View A has short sleeves and a tie-front and is slightly cropped but still very comfortable to wear with mid to high-rise bottoms. View B has long bell sleeves and a longer length, perfect for tucking into high-waisted pants. There is an optional breast pocket, and both views feature a front facing for the button placket. The Gilbert Top has a beautiful back yoke and collar that is finished using the ‘burrito method’. This everyday top is ideal for all seasons and works for both professional and casual styling. Mix and match the views to get loads of great looks!
During this 4-week class, students will learn how to sew a collar, sew a front facing, setting in sleeves in the round, the "burrito method" for sewing a yoke, and how to sew in buttons + buttonholes. This class is suitable for intermediate students who have previous experience in garment sewing. Students must be able to confidently operate a sewing machine independently.
Required Materials:
- (1) Pattern: Gilbert Top by Helen's Closet - included in the cost of class! We will have large scale printed patterns in the studio for you.
- (1) spool of coordinating thread
- lightweight fusible interfacing (Pellon SF101) - View A: 0.6 yds, View B: 0.8 yds
- 1/2" shirt buttons - View A: 3 buttons, View B: 5 buttons
Recommended Fabric:
- We recommend light to medium weight woven fabric (with no stretch) such as cotton, cotton lawn, linen, or rayon. View A works great in fabrics that have more structure like lightweight cotton and linen because the front tie can hold it's shape. View B is dreamy in flowy and draped fabrics, like rayon. Please allow extra fabric for directional prints.
- Fabric MUST be purchased from our shop. Our staff is more than happy to help you with your selections!
- As with all garment classes, we recommend students wash and dry their fabric prior to the beginning of class to prevent any further fabric shrinkage.
Yardage:
Dependent on the size of dress being made. The PDF pattern accommodates sizes 0-30 and includes two size options. There is a B-cup pattern from sizes 0-22 and a D-cup pattern from sizes 12-30. Please refer to the pattern for accurate sizing and measurements.
Required Tools:
- acrylic ruler + rotary cutter or fabric scissors
- seam ripper
- chalk or frixion pen
- pins or clips
