serger 101: serger machine basics
Do sergers scare you?!?! You're not alone! Many sewists desire to own a serger to elevate their sewing to the next level, but the idea of figuring it out on their own is daunting. Well, we're here to demystify it and get you on your way to serger success!
A serger (or overlock machine) is a special machine that uses 2, 3, or 4 threads to create professional-looking stitches and is primarily used for constructing and/or finishing seams of garments. Sergers can also be used for creating rolled hems, assembling patchwork, and more. Sergers can sew a seam, trim off the seam allowance, and finish the raw fabric edges simultaneously!
During class, students will learn serger basics on our classroom machines - the Janome MyLock 634. Students who already own a MyLock 634D may bring theirs to class. Absolutely no other machine brands/models permitted.
In this class you will:
- Learn what a serger does
- How to thread the machine for 4-thread and 3-thread serging
- How to secure ends
- Changing stitch length and width
- Deactivating and reactivating the knife
- How to tie on new thread when a cone runs out
- Changing settings for a rolled hem (if time allows)
This class is appropriate for confident beginner sewists. No previous serger experience is required.
Any student who wishes to purchase a Janome MyLock or Air Thread 2000D serger on the day of the class will be credited back the entire class registration fee!
All materials and tools are included in the cost of the class.

If you are unable to attend, a refund will only be provided if you notify us 72 hours in advance in writing by email, there is a waitlist for the class, AND we are able to fill your spot. Otherwise, a credit for a future class will be issued.
