garment series: garment sewing 101

In this 8-week course, students will learn the fulfilling art of garment making. Students will make a complete outfit using the Pietra pant pattern by Closet Core (or shorts if you prefer) and the Cielo top by Closet Core. This class is suitable for beginner sewists who have completed sewing 101 or have an equivalent skill level.

The Pietra pants are the best of both worlds: a flat front, high waisted silhouette with the comfort of an elastic waist in the back. Choose between a wide leg/cropped length or a tapered leg. The Cielo top has two options - a basic cuffed short sleeve or a dramatic gathered long sleeve.

Our instructor will systematically walk you through the foundations starting with a deep dive into all things pattern, how to read the instruction envelope and the pattern itself. You will learn how to take your measurements, choose a size and make pattern modifications. We will discuss choosing the best fabric for your projects and work through preparing the fabric, pattern tracing and cutting out your pattern.

We will start with the top and you will learn to professionally sew a neck facing, making gathered sleeves, sew darts and how to hem. When moving onto the pants, you will learn the additional skills of sewing pockets, pleats, using elastic and making a tie belt.

Students will not only receive instruction on these steps but will have sufficient time during the class to work on and master these skills under the guidance of the instructor.

Please note: this course is designed with enough work time that you should be able to finish the garments, but there may be homework to finish within the course time frames. You're always welcomed to bring your project in to one of our WIP nights to continue working on it in the studio.

Required Materials:
- Closet Core's Pietra pattern
- Closet Core's Cielo pattern
- 1/4 yd fusible interfacing for top
- 1/4 yd fusible interfacing for pants
- 1/4 yd light to medium weight interfacing for Pietra pants
- 1 yd of 2" elastic
- 1 spool of polyester thread

Note: fabric yardage depends on the size being made. You may purchase these materials after the first class. We recommend using linen, chambray or light weight denim.

- seam gauge
- chalk or frixion pen
- pins and/or wonder clips

If you are unable to attend the class, a refund will only be provided if you notify us 72 hours in advance in writing by email, there is a waitlist, and we are able to fill your spot. Otherwise, a credit for a future class will be issued.
