sewing 101 intensive: learn to sew

In this course, you will learn all the basics of the timeless craft of sewing on our machines. By the end of the series, you will have confidence in using a sewing machine independently and will have gained a wealth of knowledge including the following: proper sewing techniques (pinning, cutting, etc.) the basics of bag making, working with zippers, reading and using patterns, the basics of garment construction, working with various fabrics, and more! 

We'll start with thorough instruction of the sewing machine and getting you familiar with winding a bobbin, threading the machine, and operating it confidently.  Then we'll make a simple drawstring bag to build your confidence ('It's a Cinch').  The second project is a set of zipper pouches ('Done in a Zip'), and finally we'll tackle pajama pants ('Lenox Pajamas') to give you a solid foundation for garment sewing and construction.
 
This class is perfect for anyone who has little to no sewing experience as well as those who have not sewn for years and need a good refresher.  Absolutely no prior sewing experience is required!

Please Note: Fabrics must be purchased in our shop to ensure you have the appropriate materials for the projects. Please arrive on time for class with your materials!  Only the Project #1: "It's A Cinch" materials will be needed for the first class.  If you plan on shopping for materials on the day of class, please arrive to the shop at least 15 minutes early to ensure you have enough time to browse and shop.

Required Materials - Project #1: It's A Cinch
- (1) Pattern: "It's a Cinch" by Studio M Squared
- exterior fabric: 18" x 22" of quilting cotton - fat quarters work great!
- lining fabric: 18" x 22" of quilting cotton - fat quarters work great
- 1-1/2 yds of 1/2" wide twill tape
- (1) spool of polyester thread

Required Materials - Project #2: Done in a Zip
- (1) Pattern: "Done in a Zip" by Studio M Squared
- (1) Project Kit: Done in a Zip
- (1) spool of polyester thread

Alternatively, if you do not wish to purchase a Project Kit, you will need:

- main fabric: (1) FQ or 1/4 yd of cotton or quilting cotton (print)
- accent fabric: (1) FQ of cotton, quilting cotton, or canvas (solid)
- lining fabric: (1) FQ or 1/4 yd of cotton or quilting cotton (print or sold)
- (1) 7" zipper
- (1) 9" zipper
- 1 yd of Pellon SF101
- (1) spool of polyester thread

Required Materials - Project #3: Lenox Pajamas
- (1) Pattern: Lenox Pajamas by Studio M Squared
- (1) spool of polyester thread
- 1-1/4 yd of 1" wide elastic
- fabric - yardage is dependent on size of pajama pant you are making; fabric can be purchased after your instructor has taken you through the process of measuring yourself in class!

Pattern Note - Lenox Pajamas:
If your measurements do not fit the 'Lenox Pajamas' sizes, please purchase the following patterns in lieu of the Lenox Pajamas:
- Women's Plus-Size (Sizes XXS-5XL): Effie Womens' Pajamas
- Men's (Sizes XS-6XL): Haymitch Mens' Pajamas
- If you are purchasing either the Effie or Haymitch Pajama Pants, purchase includes a wide format pattern and instructions.

Required Tools:
- fabric scissors
- pins and/or clips
- chalk or frixion pen
- clover hot press ruler, not required for PJ pants but highly recommended!

If you are unable to attend the class, a refund will only be provided if you notify us 72 hours in advance in writing by email, there is a waitlist for the class, and we are able to fill your spot.  Otherwise, a credit for a future class will be issued.
