quilting series: scrappy applique

In this class, you’ll learn the Scrappy Applique method developed by Texas-based designer Shannon Brinkley.  Scrappy Applique is a quick and simple way to create the look of patchwork without all the fuss of cutting perfectly sized shapes and piecing them together.  You can use it to applique ANY shape, design, image, name or word that you can dream up onto a fabric background! We LOVE this method because it’s so fun and the possibilities are endless.  Use it to make wall hangings, quilts, table runners, placemats, and pillows, or embellish tote bags.

To learn the Scrappy Applique method, we’ll make an accent pillow cover with a zippered enclosure in the back.  Students can choose to make a Valentine’s Day themed “LOVE” pillow or St. Patrick’s Day themed “LUCKY” pillow.   You’ll leave this class not only with a beautiful handmade pillow for holiday decorating, but the skill set to apply this method and make a multitude of embellished projects.   In addition to learning Scrappy Applique, you’ll learn how to install a lapped zipper, which will take your pillow-making game up a notch!

Required Materials:

- Scrappy Applique Class Kit - includes three types of interfacing, clear thread, 2/3yd of muslin and full alphabet applique template.
- 1/3 yard fabric for pillow – we recommend a solid or very subtle pattern. Choose quilting cotton or a cotton/linen blend such as Essex Linen.   This color/value of this fabric should differ significantly from that of your applique fabrics so that the letters will stand out. (For example, our “LOVE” pillow was made with dark pink fabrics on a light pink background).

- 5 to 6 coordinating fabrics for applique.  If using scraps, choose pieces that are at least 4” wide by 10” long.  If using yardage, purchase 1/8 yard of each fabric. When choosing fabrics, we recommend the following:

1.  Select 3-4 fabrics with very similar color values (lightness/darkness) and no more than 1-2 fabrics with a value differing from the others.  For example, our “LOVE” pillow was made with 4 dark pink fabrics very similar in value to each other, and 1 lighter pink fabric.
2. Do not choose fabric with large scale prints (big florals or geometrics) or many colors. Choose fabrics with small scale prints and minimal color variation in them.

(1) 9" zipper
(1) spool of thread for satin stitching around the letters (choose a color to match the predominant color of your applique fabrics)
(1) spool of thread for quilting the pillow front (choose a color to match your pillow fabric closely).

Materials are available in our shop at a 15% discount for enrolled students.

Students must arrive to class on time, with all materials purchased.  As with all garment classes, we recommend students wash and dry their fabric before class.
